Private tutor in New Haven, CT

Education

Current Yale University Neuroscience PhD student. Columbia University graduate, Major in Biochemistry + Minor in Psychology

Experience

In Singapore I was a volunteer tutor, teaching English, math, and science to underprivileged K-12 students. (I don't believe that finances should ever be an impediment to learning, so please contact me if you are in need of tutoring but have financial difficulties, and I'll do my best to work something out with you.) Since I moved to New Haven, I've been a teaching assistant at Yale University for Neurobiology and Drugs, Brain & Behavior. I've tutored several students through this website in math (SAT and GRE) and they boast a marked improvement in grades after at least a month of tutoring. I've also assisted with calculus, biochemistry and neurobiology homework via email on an ad hoc basis. I'm open to any arrangement, whether you want to meet on a weekly basis or if you want to meet/email once to ask me a couple of quick questions; my goal is to ensure that you learn something with each encounter! GREs (taken in 2011): Math: 170/170 (99% percentile) Verbal: 163/170 (93% percentile) Writing: 5.5/6 (96% percentile) SATs (taken in 2006): Math: 790/800 Verbal: 720/800 Writing: 720/800 A levels (British high-school system): Biology: A Chemistry: A Math: A Economics: A English: B Chinese B

Hobbies

I spend most of my time exploring the world with a healthy dose of curiosity, inquisitiveness and skepticism. I study the brain because I, like many others, have a fundamental (and somewhat narcissistic) interest in understanding why we humans are each so strange and interesting and unique in our own ways. To do so, I look at the tiny fruit-fly's brain to understand how it makes decisions and how it responds to stress. I also just adopted two adorable pet rats and am really enjoying playing with them and learning how intelligent they are! When I'm not bogged down with research, I do as much traveling as I can to expose myself to new sights, cultures and ideas. I grew up in Singapore and have lived, studied in and visited a variety of countries in Asia, Europe and North + Central America. Please feel free to email me at liyanmccurdy at gmail dot com for inquiries! I'll do everything I can so you get the most out of each session :)
